100 parasta

Vihan hedelmät

Time-lehti on koonnut sata parasta englanninkielistä kirjaa vuodesta 1923 nykyhetkeen. Monenlaisia "100 parasta" -listoja liikkuu mediassa. Yleensä yleisön annetaan valita ja seurauksena on melkoisen sekalainen valikoima pariin viime vuoteen painottuvaa sälää, koska - olipa kyse suurmiehistä, tärkeistä tapahtumista, parhaista elokuvista tai kirjoista - painotus on viimeksi luettuun/nähtyyn/TV:ssä esiintyneseen. Tämän listan ovat keränneet Time-lehden kirjallisuusarvostelijat, joten sillä on painoarvoa. Kansallista nokkapokkaakaan ei tarvitse käydä - rajaus on englanninkieliseen kirjallisuuteen. Takaraja, vuosi 1923, on Time-lehden ensimmäinen ilmestymisvuosi.

Monet kirjoista ovat tuttuja suomennoksina. Väliin jääneet panevat miettimään - sattui huono vuosi, kirja oli liian amerikkalainen (tai englantilainen) ja kustannusvirkailijat vain eivät pitäneet siitä. Listalta tutut ovat kiinnostava kokoelma - joukossa on scifiä (Gibsonin "Neuromancer"), lasten fantasiaa (Narnia-kirja "Velho ja leijona"), vanhoja klassikkoja ("San Luis Reyn silta") ja aivan uusia (Ishiguron "Ole luonani aina"). Onpa joukkoon mahtunut myös sarjakuvaromaani "Watchmen".

Koska itse pidän kirjalistoista, vedän tähän näytille koko 100 kirjan listan ilman erityistä järjestystä, eli siinä kirjan nimien mukaisessa aakkosjärjestyksessä, jossa Time-lehti ne esittelee. Hyvää metsästysonnea!
